About Judge Shapiro Judge James Shapiro's Story: "Some years ago, I volunteered to help in the Iowa caucuses. So I'm going around, door to door, trying to drum up support for my candidate. And I run into this really nice lady, a real Midwesterner, who opens the door, listens to my speech, and asks me if I have any political ambitions myself. And so I tell her kind of sheepishly, 'Maybe a judge or something.' And with all the sincerity that only a Midwesterner could muster, she looks me straight in the eye and says, almost pleadingly, 'Be a good one.' So I promised her I would. She was a perfect stranger to me, but the earnestness with which she said it made it seem like I knew her for years. And for almost 20 years now I haven't been able to get her out of my head. The episode plays over and over again like a film loop. I promised myself I would never let that nice lady down, because if I did I would be letting myself down."
"I am trying to keep that promise I made all those years ago. I never wanted to be a judge just for the sake of being a judge...
I want to be a judge to be a good judge."
